TWENTY-FIVE

The day was a whirlwind from the moment Dylan arrived at the office. There were messages piled up and back-to-back meetings until noon. It had been a crazy week, but she refused to let the frenzy overtake her. She returned the calls in order of importance and put her staff on notice that she would be behind closed doors for the rest of the day. She only wanted to be interrupted if some sort of natural disaster was imminent.

There was a knock on her office door. She glanced at the clock on her desk. It was almost three in the afternoon. “Come in,” she called out.

Her assistant, Callie, poked her head in. “Sorry to interrupt.”

“This better be an emergency.”

“You have a call and you have your do not disturb on.”

“For good reason…”

“It’s just that Barrett has been calling. He said he hoped you wouldn’t mind the reprieve.”

Dylan smiled. “Thanks, Callie. Put him through.”

“You got it.” Callie closed the door.

Dylan’s desk phone rang. “Good afternoon.”

“You aren’t easy to catch up with,” Barrett said.

“I know, I’m sorry.”

“How are you?”

“Having the day from hell.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. I won’t keep you. I’m sending you something. I wanted to make sure you were there first because you need to sign for it.”

“What is it?” she asked with a lilt to her voice.

“You’ll see. I’ll talk to you later.”

He hung up before she had a chance to question him more. What could Barrett be sending to her office, she wondered. She smiled to herself and got back to work. As busy as Dylan was, she wouldn’t trade business ownership for anything in the world. It was hard work but rewarding. She was proud of her accomplishments and poised to achieve so much more.

About an hour later, there was a knock on her door. “Come in.”

Callie escorted a messenger inside. “He insisted you needed to sign for this personally.”

“No problem.” Dylan took the envelope from the messenger and signed his paperwork. “Thank you.”

“I promise no more interruptions,” Callie said, closing the door behind them as they exited.

Dylan opened the metal clasp on the manila envelope and peered inside. A smile spread across her face. She shook her head, picked up the phone, and immediately dialed Barrett.

He answered on the first ring. “I hope my delivery made your day a little better.”

“Did you really send me a first-class ticket to Riviera Maya?”

“Will you be my travel companion this weekend?”

“This ticket is for tomorrow.”

“Friday kicks off the weekend.”

“Wow… um…”

“I would love for you to join me.”

Dylan tried to gather her thoughts. She wasn’t sure whether she could join Barrett on his jaunt to Mexico on such short notice. “I’d like to—”

“Come on. Take tomorrow off and fly with me to Riviera Maya. Let’s get those pretty toes in the hot sand,” he said.

Dylan laughed. “Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Yes, I’ll go with you to Riviera Maya.”

“Just what I wanted to hear. I’ll call you this evening.”

Dylan hung up the phone and couldn’t stop smiling. She wanted to go, and it didn’t make sense to fight it.
